Schur orthogonality for compact groups

Builds on Compact groupHaar measureUnitary representationIrreducible representationCharacter of a representation

Statement

Let GG be a compact group with normalised Haar measure dgdg, and for α,β∈L2(G)\alpha, \beta \in L^2(G) write ⟨α,β⟩=∫Gα(g)β(g)‾ dg\ip{\alpha}{\beta} = \int_G \alpha(g)\overline{\beta(g)} \, dg. Let π\pi and σ\sigma be finite-dimensional continuous irreducible unitary representations of GG, of dimension dπd_\pi and dσd_\sigma. Let πij\pi_{ij} and σkl\sigma_{kl} be their matrix coefficients in orthonormal bases.

  1. If π\pi and σ\sigma are not isomorphic, then ⟨πij,σkl⟩=0\ip{\pi_{ij}}{\sigma_{kl}} = 0 for all indices.
  2. For all indices i,j,k,li, j, k, l, one has ⟨πij,πkl⟩=δikδjl/dπ\ip{\pi_{ij}}{\pi_{kl}} = \delta_{ik}\delta_{jl}/d_\pi.
  3. The characters χπ=tr⁡π\chi_\pi = \tr \pi and χσ=tr⁡σ\chi_\sigma = \tr \sigma satisfy ⟨χπ,χσ⟩=1\ip{\chi_\pi}{\chi_\sigma} = 1 if π≅σ\pi \cong \sigma and ⟨χπ,χσ⟩=0\ip{\chi_\pi}{\chi_\sigma} = 0 otherwise.

Remarks

For a linear map AA between the two spaces, the average ∫Gσ(g)Aπ(g)−1 dg\int_G \sigma(g) A \pi(g)^{-1} \, dg intertwines π\pi and σ\sigma. By Schur's lemma it is 00 when they are not isomorphic and a scalar when π=σ\pi = \sigma. Taking AA to be a matrix unit gives parts 1 and 2, the scalar being found by taking traces; summing over i=ji = j and k=lk = l gives part 3. Example: for G=𝕋G = \mathbb{T} with the characters χn(z)=zn\chi_n(z) = z^n, part 3 reads 12π∫02πeinθe−imθ dθ=δnm\frac{1}{2\pi}\int_0^{2\pi} e^{in\theta} e^{-im\theta} \, d\theta = \delta_{nm}. For a finite group with Haar measure the counting measure divided by ∣G∣\abs{G}, the statement is the Schur orthogonality relations of finite groups. A consequence: a finite-dimensional continuous representation with character χ\chi is irreducible if and only if ⟨χ,χ⟩=1\ip{\chi}{\chi} = 1.

For a student

These relations give the orthonormality half of the Peter–Weyl theorem; the completeness half is the harder part. For compact connected Lie groups, the Weyl integration formula turns the character relation into an integral over a maximal torus, which is the route to the Weyl character formula. The relations apply to every finite-dimensional continuous representation after a change of basis, since each one is unitary for a suitable inner product by complete reducibility.
