Pontryagin dual

Definition
Let be a locally compact abelian group, and let be the circle group. The Pontryagin dual of is the set of all continuous characters , with:
- the group operation ;
- the compact-open topology, that is, the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets of .
Remarks
Example: for with the discrete topology, a character is fixed by , since , and each gives a character. Uniform convergence on finite sets is pointwise convergence, so as topological groups. Non-example: the group of all characters of , continuous or not, is not the Pontryagin dual of . There are discontinuous homomorphisms , built from a Hamel basis, and the dual excludes them. With the compact-open topology, is again a locally compact abelian group. If is compact, then is discrete, and if is discrete, then is compact.
