Definition

Let GG be a totally disconnected locally compact group that is compactly generated. A Cayley–Abels graph for GG is a graph Γ\Gamma with an action of GG by graph automorphisms such that:

  1. Γ\Gamma is connected;
  2. Γ\Gamma is locally finite: every vertex has finite degree;
  3. GG acts transitively on the vertices of Γ\Gamma;
  4. the stabiliser in GG of each vertex is a compact open subgroup of GG.

Remarks

Example: let GG be a finitely generated group with the discrete topology, and let SS be a finite symmetric generating set. The Cayley graph of (G,S)(G, S), with GG acting by left multiplication, is connected because SS generates GG. Each vertex has degree at most ∣S∣\abs{S}, the action is transitive, and stabilisers are trivial, hence compact and open.

Example: G=Aut(Td)G = \mathrm{Aut}(T_d), the automorphism group of the regular tree TdT_d of degree d≥3d \ge 3, acting on TdT_d. Vertex stabilisers are compact and open in the topology of pointwise convergence.

Non-example: ℤ\Z acting on its Cayley graph with respect to the infinite generating set ℤ\Z. The graph is complete, so every vertex has infinite degree, and clause 2 fails.

Construction: choose a compact open subgroup UU and a finite symmetric set AA with GG generated by U∪AU \cup A. Take the cosets gUgU as vertices, and join gUgU and hUhU when g−1h∈UAUg^{-1} h \in U A U. This is a Cayley–Abels graph, since UAUUAU is a finite union of cosets of UU.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
