Definition
Let be a locally compact group. Two unitary representations on and on are unitarily equivalent if there is a unitary operator with for all . The unitary dual of is the set of unitary equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations of .
Remarks
Unitary equivalence is an equivalence relation, so is well defined. It is usually given the Fell topology, which comes from the identification of with the spectrum of the group C*-algebra .
Example: . By Schur's lemma, every irreducible unitary representation of an abelian group is one-dimensional, so it is a continuous homomorphism . These are the maps with , and different give inequivalent representations, so is in bijection with .
Non-example: the representation of on by translations does not define a point of , since it is not irreducible. The closed subspace of functions whose Fourier transform vanishes on is invariant under all translations and is neither nor .
For a locally compact abelian group, is the group of continuous characters, the Pontryagin dual. For a compact group, every element of is finite-dimensional.
