Order topology
Builds on Total orderTopological spaceSubbasis
Definition
Let be a totally ordered set. The order topology on is the topology on with subbasis the open rays
Remarks
When has more than one point, the open intervals together with the open rays form a basis of the order topology.
Example: on with its usual order, the open rays generate the open intervals, so the order topology is the usual topology of .
Non-example: let as a subset of . With the subspace topology from , the point is isolated. In the order topology of , every open set containing contains a ray , which contains for all . So the subspace topology of is not its order topology, although the order of is the restriction of the order of .
Some authors also use the name for the topology generated by the same rays on an arbitrary partially ordered set.
