Product metric
Builds on Metric spaceCartesian product
Definition
Let and be metric spaces. The product metric on the Cartesian product is the function with for all and .
Remarks
The function is a metric on . Other common product metrics are and . Each of them is between and , so all of them are equivalent and give the product topology. For with the usual metric, is the sup metric on . The same formula with a maximum over factors gives a product metric on a product of metric spaces.
