Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let Z⊆XZ \subseteq X be a closed set. A point η∈Z\eta \in Z is a generic point of ZZ if the closure of {η}\set{\eta} is ZZ. A generic point of XX is a generic point of the closed set XX.

Remarks

A closed set with a generic point is irreducible: it is not the union of two smaller closed sets. In a scheme, every irreducible closed subset has a unique generic point, so the underlying space of a scheme is a sober space. Example: in X=Spec⁡ℤX = \operatorname{Spec} \Z, the closure of {(0)}\set{(0)} is V(0)=XV(0) = X, because (0)(0) is contained in every prime ideal. So (0)(0) is the generic point of XX. Non-example: the point (p)(p), for a prime pp, is not a generic point of XX, since {(p)}\set{(p)} is already closed. Non-example: XX itself has no generic point when X=Spec⁡k[x,y]/(xy)X = \operatorname{Spec} k[x, y]/(xy) for a field kk, since XX is the union of the two lines V(x)V(x) and V(y)V(y).
