Statement

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space, let A⊆XA \subseteq X be nonempty, and let L≥0L \ge 0. Let f ⁣:A→ℝf \colon A \to \R satisfy ∣f(a)−f(b)∣≤L d(a,b)\abs{f(a) - f(b)} \le L \, d(a, b) for all a,b∈Aa, b \in A. For x∈Xx \in X set F(x)=inf⁡a∈A(f(a)+L d(x,a)),G(x)=sup⁡a∈A(f(a)−L d(x,a)).F(x) = \inf_{a \in A} \bigl( f(a) + L \, d(x, a) \bigr), \qquad G(x) = \sup_{a \in A} \bigl( f(a) - L \, d(x, a) \bigr). Then:

  1. FF and GG are real-valued, equal ff on AA, and satisfy the Lipschitz condition with constant LL on XX.
  2. Every function h ⁣:X→ℝh \colon X \to \R that equals ff on AA and is Lipschitz with constant LL satisfies G≤h≤FG \le h \le F on XX.

Remarks

Proof idea: fix a0∈Aa_0 \in A; for a∈Aa \in A, f(a)+Ld(x,a)≥f(a0)−Ld(a,a0)+Ld(x,a)≥f(a0)−Ld(x,a0)f(a) + L d(x, a) \ge f(a_0) - L d(a, a_0) + L d(x, a) \ge f(a_0) - L d(x, a_0), so the infimum is finite. For x∈Ax \in A the same inequality with a0=xa_0 = x shows F(x)≥f(x)F(x) \ge f(x), and the choice a=xa = x gives F(x)≤f(x)F(x) \le f(x). Each function x↦f(a)+Ld(x,a)x \mapsto f(a) + L d(x, a) is LL-Lipschitz, and an infimum of LL-Lipschitz functions that is finite is LL-Lipschitz. Example: on X=ℝX = \R with A={0,1}A = \set{0, 1}, f(0)=0f(0) = 0, f(1)=1f(1) = 1 and L=1L = 1, both FF and GG equal xx on [0,1][0, 1], while F(x)=∣x∣F(x) = \abs{x} and G(x)=xG(x) = x for x≤0x \le 0, and F(x)=xF(x) = x and G(x)=1−∣x−1∣G(x) = 1 - \abs{x - 1} for x≥1x \ge 1. For maps into ℝm\R^m with m≥2m \ge 2, the same constant needs the Kirszbraun theorem.

Going deeper

For a student

The result needs no structure on XX beyond the metric, unlike the vector-valued Kirszbraun theorem. It shows, for example, that every Lipschitz function on a closed set of ℝn\R^n extends to ℝn\R^n, which is useful before applying Rademacher's theorem.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
