Fixed point

Builds on Function

Definition

Let XX be a set and let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X be a map. A point x∈Xx \in X is a fixed point of ff if f(x)=xf(x) = x. The set of fixed points of ff is Fix⁡(f)={x∈X:f(x)=x}\operatorname{Fix}(f) = \set{x \in X : f(x) = x}.

Remarks

If xx is a fixed point of ff, then fn(x)=xf^n(x) = x for every n≥0n \ge 0, so the orbit of xx is the single point {x}\set{x}.

Example: f(x)=cos⁡xf(x) = \cos x on ℝ\R has a fixed point x0∈(0,1)x_0 \in (0, 1). Indeed g(x)=cos⁡x−xg(x) = \cos x - x is continuous with g(0)=1>0g(0) = 1 > 0 and g(1)=cos⁡1−1<0g(1) = \cos 1 - 1 < 0, so gg vanishes somewhere in (0,1)(0, 1).

Non-example: the translation f(x)=x+1f(x) = x + 1 on ℝ\R has no fixed point, since x+1≠xx + 1 \ne x for every xx.

For a function of one real variable, xx is a fixed point exactly when the graph of ff meets the line y=xy = x at (x,x)(x, x). In Lean's Mathlib the predicate is Function.IsFixedPt f x.
