Difference and functional equations Definition
Equilibrium of a difference equation
Builds on Fixed pointRecurrence relation
Definition
Let be a set and let . Let be a function, and consider the autonomous recurrence A point is an equilibrium (or equilibrium point) of this difference equation if . For , this says that is a fixed point of .
Remarks
The point is an equilibrium if and only if the constant sequence is a solution. Example: for the logistic recurrence on with , the equation gives the equilibria and . For , check: . Non-example: on has no equilibrium, since for every . For a non-autonomous equation , an equilibrium is a point with for all . Other names are fixed point, steady state and stationary solution.
