Cesàro mean

Builds on Real sequence

Definition

Let (an)n≥1(a_n)_{n \ge 1} be a real sequence. For each integer n≥1n \ge 1, the nn-th Cesàro mean of (an)(a_n) is the arithmetic mean of its first nn terms, σn=a1+a2+⋯+ann.\sigma_n = \frac{a_1 + a_2 + \cdots + a_n}{n}.

Remarks

The sequence (−1)n+1(-1)^{n+1} diverges, but its Cesàro means are 1,0,1/3,0,1/5,…1, 0, 1/3, 0, 1/5, \dots, and they tend to 00. If (an)(a_n) converges, the Cesàro means converge to the same limit. Cesàro summation applies the Cesàro means to the partial sums of a series. A series is Cesàro summable with sum AA when the means of its partial sums tend to AA.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 3 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
