Uniform convergence of absolutely summable Fourier series

Builds on Fourier coefficientFourier seriesUniform convergenceWeierstrass M-testFejér's theoremContinuous function

Statement

Let f ⁣:ℝ→ℂf \colon \R \to \C be a continuous 2π2\pi-periodic function whose Fourier coefficients satisfy ∑n∈ℤ∣f^(n)∣<∞.\sum_{n \in \Z} \abs{\hat f(n)} < \infty. Then the partial sums SNf(x)=∑n=−NNf^(n)einxS_N f(x) = \sum_{n=-N}^{N} \hat f(n) e^{inx} of its Fourier series converge to ff uniformly on ℝ\R.

Remarks

Since ∣f^(n)einx∣=∣f^(n)∣\abs{\hat f(n) e^{inx}} = \abs{\hat f(n)}, the Weierstrass M-test shows that SNfS_N f converges uniformly to a continuous 2π2\pi-periodic function gg. Uniform convergence allows integration term by term, so g^(n)=f^(n)\hat g(n) = \hat f(n) for all nn. Then f−gf - g is continuous with all Fourier coefficients zero, and its Fejér means, which converge uniformly to f−gf - g by Fejér's theorem, are all zero; hence f=gf = g. Example: for f(x)=∣x∣f(x) = \abs{x} on [−π,π][-\pi, \pi], extended periodically, f^(0)=π2\hat f(0) = \frac{\pi}{2} and f^(n)=(−1)n−1πn2\hat f(n) = \frac{(-1)^n - 1}{\pi n^2} for n≠0n \ne 0, which is summable. Without continuity the conclusion fails: if ff is only integrable with summable coefficients, the series converges uniformly to a continuous function that equals ff only almost everywhere. Every f∈C1f \in C^1 periodic satisfies the hypothesis, by the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality and Parseval's identity applied to f′f'.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the simplest sufficient condition for uniform convergence, and it is easy to check from decay of the coefficients, for instance ∣f^(n)∣≤C∣n∣−1−δ\abs{\hat f(n)} \le C \abs{n}^{-1-\delta} with δ>0\delta > 0. The functions with summable Fourier coefficients form the Wiener algebra A(𝕋)A(\mathbb{T}). Bernstein's theorem shows that Hölder continuity of order α>12\alpha > \frac{1}{2} is enough to be in A(𝕋)A(\mathbb{T}). The condition is far from necessary: there are continuous functions whose Fourier series converge uniformly but not absolutely.
