Cesàro means of a convergent sequence converge

Builds on Cesàro meanLimit of a sequence

Statement

Let (an)n≥1(a_n)_{n \ge 1} be a real sequence that converges to a real number LL. For n≥1n \ge 1, let σn=(a1+⋯+an)/n\sigma_n = (a_1 + \cdots + a_n)/n be its Cesàro mean. Then σn→L\sigma_n \to L as n→∞n \to \infty.

Remarks

For the proof, let ε>0\varepsilon > 0 and take NN with ∣ak−L∣<ε|a_k - L| < \varepsilon for k>Nk > N. For n>Nn > N, ∣σn−L∣≤1n∑k=1N∣ak−L∣+n−Nnε.|\sigma_n - L| \le \frac{1}{n} \sum_{k=1}^{N} |a_k - L| + \frac{n - N}{n} \varepsilon. The first term tends to 00, so ∣σn−L∣<2ε|\sigma_n - L| < 2\varepsilon for large nn. The converse fails. The means of (−1)n(-1)^n tend to 00, but (−1)n(-1)^n diverges. The statement is a special case of the Stolz–Cesàro theorem with bn=nb_n = n.
