Poncelet's closure theorem

Builds on EllipseTangent line

Statement

Let CC and DD be ellipses in the Euclidean plane with DD in the interior of CC. For P0∈CP_0 \in C, build a sequence P0,P1,P2,…P_0, P_1, P_2, \ldots on CC as follows. From PkP_k there are two tangent lines to DD. For k≥1k \ge 1, take the one other than the line Pk−1PkP_{k-1} P_k; for k=0k = 0, take either one. Let Pk+1P_{k+1} be the second point where this tangent line meets CC. Suppose that for one starting point P0P_0 the sequence satisfies Pn=P0P_n = P_0 for some n≥3n \ge 3. Then Pn=P0P_n = P_0 holds for every starting point P0∈CP_0 \in C.

Remarks

The polygon P0P1⋯Pn−1P_0 P_1 \cdots P_{n-1} is inscribed in CC and circumscribed about DD. A modern proof considers the curve of pairs (P,ℓ)(P, \ell) with P∈CP \in C and ℓ\ell a tangent line of DD through PP. Over the complex numbers this curve is an elliptic curve, and one step of the construction is a translation on it. A translation that has a point of period nn has every point of period nn. Example: for two concentric circles with radii RR and R/2R/2, every inscribed equilateral triangle is circumscribed about the inner circle, so every start closes after 33 steps. For a triangle and two circles, closure happens exactly when Euler's theorem d2=R(R−2r)d^2 = R(R - 2r) holds between the radii and the distance dd of the centres.

Going deeper

For a student

Poncelet's theorem is a porism: the closing property is all or nothing. It holds more generally for two smooth conics in general position in the complex projective plane. Its proof through elliptic curves is a standard illustration of how the group law of a cubic curve solves a problem of elementary geometry.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
