Tangent line

Builds on Derivative

Summary

Let ff be differentiable at aa. The tangent line to the graph of ff at (a,f(a))(a, f(a)) is the line y=f(a)+f′(a)(x−a)y = f(a) + f'(a)(x - a). It is the line through this point that best fits the graph near it.

Remarks

The tangent line is the limit of the secant lines through (a,f(a))(a, f(a)) and (x,f(x))(x, f(x)) as x→ax \to a. The error f(x)−f(a)−f′(a)(x−a)f(x) - f(a) - f'(a)(x - a) is o(x−a)o(x - a) as x→ax \to a. This property characterizes the derivative. For f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 at a=1a = 1, the tangent line is y=2x−1y = 2x - 1.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 4 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.
