Differentiation operator as inverse of integration
Builds on Mikusiński field of operatorsIntegration operator as convolution with the unit stepFundamental theorem of calculus
Statement
Let be the Mikusiński field of operators, the field of fractions of the convolution ring of locally integrable functions on . Let be the constant function on , and let be its inverse in . For a complex number , write also for the numerical operator of , which corresponds to the function divided by . Let be continuously differentiable on . Then in . More generally, if is times continuously differentiable on , then
Remarks
By the fundamental theorem of calculus, . By the integration operator result this reads in the convolution ring. Multiplying both sides by gives , which is the first formula. The general formula follows by induction on . For example, with , one gets , so in . The operator is not a function: it is a quotient of functions, and equals the function only when .

For a student
This formula has the same shape as the rule for the Laplace transform. Mikusiński's calculus gets it with no condition on the growth of and no convergence of integrals. A linear differential equation with constant coefficients and initial values becomes an algebraic equation in in the field . One then solves for the unknown and reads off a function, often after a partial fraction expansion in .
