Real functions Definition

Infinite limit

Builds on Limit of a function

Definition

Let D⊆ℝD \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→ℝf \colon D \to \mathbb{R}, and let aa be a limit point of DD. The notation f(x)→+∞f(x) \to +\infty as x→ax \to a means that for each real MM there is δ>0\delta > 0 with f(x)>Mf(x) > M for all x∈Dx \in D with 0<∣x−a∣<δ0 < |x - a| < \delta. The definition of f(x)→−∞f(x) \to -\infty is the same, with f(x)<Mf(x) < M.

Remarks

An infinite limit is not a limit in the sense of limit of a function, which requires a real value LL. For example, 1/x2→+∞1/x^2 \to +\infty as x→0x \to 0. The same idea gives f(x)→+∞f(x) \to +\infty as x→+∞x \to +\infty. An example is f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
