Final value theorem

Builds on Laplace transformLimit of a function

Statement

Let f ⁣:[0,∞)→ℂf \colon [0, \infty) \to \C be integrable on each interval [0,T][0, T]. Assume that the limit f(∞)=lim⁡t→∞f(t)f(\infty) = \lim_{t \to \infty} f(t) exists and is finite. Then the Laplace integral F(s)F(s) of ff converges for every real s>0s > 0, and lim⁡s→0+sF(s)=f(∞),\lim_{s \to 0^+} s F(s) = f(\infty), where ss tends to 00 through positive real values.

Remarks

Since ff has a finite limit, it is bounded for large tt, so F(s)F(s) converges for s>0s > 0. Since s∫0∞e−st dt=1s \int_0^\infty e^{-s t} \, dt = 1, the difference sF(s)−f(∞)s F(s) - f(\infty) equals s∫0∞e−st(f(t)−f(∞)) dts \int_0^\infty e^{-s t} (f(t) - f(\infty)) \, dt. As s→0+s \to 0^+ the weight se−sts e^{-s t} spreads its mass over large tt, where f(t)−f(∞)f(t) - f(\infty) is small, and the part over a fixed interval [0,T][0, T] tends to 00. Example: for f(t)=1−e−tf(t) = 1 - e^{-t}, sF(s)=1−s/(s+1)→1=f(∞)s F(s) = 1 - s/(s + 1) \to 1 = f(\infty). The hypothesis that f(∞)f(\infty) exists is needed: for f(t)=sin⁡tf(t) = \sin t, sF(s)=s/(s2+1)→0s F(s) = s / (s^2 + 1) \to 0, but sin⁡t\sin t has no limit.

Going deeper

For a student

In control theory one uses it to find the steady-state error of a stable system. For a rational FF, the limit f(∞)f(\infty) exists when all poles of sF(s)s F(s) lie in the open left half-plane; then the theorem applies. If sF(s)s F(s) has a pole on the imaginary axis or to its right, the formula can give a wrong answer, as the example sin⁡t\sin t shows. The converse direction, from FF to ff, needs extra hypotheses and belongs to the Tauberian theorems. Its companion is the initial value theorem.
