Arnold tongue
Builds on Circle mapRotation numberCantor function
Definition
For and , let be the standard circle map on , an orientation-preserving homeomorphism. Let be its lift to , and let be the translation number of this lift, as in the definition of the rotation number. For a rational number , the Arnold tongue of is the set
Remarks
Example: the tongue . The translation number of is exactly when has a fixed point, that is, when for some . So , a wedge with its tip at . The point is not in , since .
For the map is the rotation by , so meets the line only at . For the section of at height is a closed interval of positive length. For fixed , the function is continuous and nondecreasing; for it is constant on each such interval and is a devil's staircase, like the Cantor function. Translation by in maps onto .
