Real functions Differentiation Proposition

Second derivative test

Builds on Second derivativeLocal minimumFirst derivative test

Statement

Let ff be a real function differentiable on an open interval around cc, with f′(c)=0f'(c) = 0. Assume that the second derivative f′′(c)f''(c) exists. If f′′(c)>0f''(c) > 0, then ff has a strict local minimum at cc. If f′′(c)<0f''(c) < 0, then ff has a strict local maximum at cc.

Remarks

If f′′(c)>0f''(c) > 0, then f′(x)/(x−c)→f′′(c)f'(x)/(x - c) \to f''(c). So f′f' is negative just left of cc and positive just right of cc, and the first derivative test applies. If f′′(c)=0f''(c) = 0, the test gives no answer. The functions x4x^4, −x4-x^4, and x3x^3 at 00 show all three cases. Mathlib states the minimum case as isLocalMin_of_deriv_deriv_pos.
