Real functions Differentiation Proposition
First derivative test
Builds on Local minimumA function with nonnegative derivative is increasing
Statement
Let be a real function on an open interval with , continuous at and differentiable at each . If for and for , then has a local minimum at . If the inequalities are reversed, then has a local maximum at .
Remarks
The function is decreasing on the left and increasing on the right of .
The test needs no derivative at . It works for at .
Mathlib states the minimum case as isLocalMin_of_deriv.
