Removable discontinuity

Builds on Limit of a functionContinuity at a point

Definition

Let D⊆ℝD \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→ℝf \colon D \to \mathbb{R}, and let a∈Da \in D be a limit point of DD. The point aa is a removable discontinuity of ff if the limit L=lim⁡x→af(x)L = \lim_{x \to a} f(x) exists and L≠f(a)L \ne f(a).

Remarks

Change the value of ff at aa to LL. The new function is continuous at aa. For example, let f(x)=1f(x) = 1 for x≠0x \ne 0 and f(0)=0f(0) = 0. Then 00 is a removable discontinuity. Some texts also call aa removable when a∉Da \notin D and the limit exists. An example is sin⁡(x)/x\sin(x)/x at 00.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
