Real functions Theorem

Continuity is equivalent to sequential continuity

Builds on Continuous functionSequential continuityEpsilon-delta definition of continuity

Statement

Let D⊆ℝD \subseteq \mathbb{R} and let f ⁣:D→ℝf \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be a function. Then ff is continuous if and only if ff is sequentially continuous.

Remarks

The forward direction follows from the epsilon-delta form of continuity. For the converse, suppose that ff is not continuous at aa. Then there is ε>0\varepsilon > 0 and for each nn a point xnx_n with ∣xn−a∣<1/n|x_n - a| < 1/n and ∣f(xn)−f(a)∣≥ε|f(x_n) - f(a)| \ge \varepsilon. The equivalence holds in all metric spaces. Mathlib states it for sequential spaces, as continuous_iff_seqContinuous.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
