Definition

Let PP and QQ be complex polynomials with Q≠0Q \ne 0 and deg⁡P<deg⁡Q\deg P < \deg Q, and let F=P/QF = P/Q be the rational function. Let a1,…,ara_1, \ldots, a_r be the distinct roots of QQ, with multiplicities m1,…,mrm_1, \ldots, m_r. The partial fraction decomposition writes FF uniquely as F(s)=∑j=1r∑k=1mjcjk(s−aj)kF(s) = \sum_{j=1}^{r} \sum_{k=1}^{m_j} \frac{c_{j k}}{(s - a_j)^k} with complex constants cjkc_{j k}. Inversion by partial fractions is the computation of the inverse Laplace transform of FF as f(t)=∑j=1r∑k=1mjcjk tk−1(k−1)! eajt,t≥0.f(t) = \sum_{j=1}^{r} \sum_{k=1}^{m_j} c_{j k} \, \frac{t^{k-1}}{(k-1)!} \, e^{a_j t}, \qquad t \ge 0. It rests on the identity ℒ{tk−1eat/(k−1)!}(s)=1/(s−a)k\mathcal{L}\{t^{k-1} e^{a t}/(k-1)!\}(s) = 1/(s - a)^k for Re⁡s>Re⁡a\operatorname{Re} s > \operatorname{Re} a.

Remarks

The identity follows from ℒ{tk−1}(s)=(k−1)!/sk\mathcal{L}\{t^{k-1}\}(s) = (k-1)!/s^k and the frequency shift theorem. Example: F(s)=s+3(s+1)(s+2)=2s+1−1s+2F(s) = \frac{s + 3}{(s + 1)(s + 2)} = \frac{2}{s + 1} - \frac{1}{s + 2}, so f(t)=2e−t−e−2tf(t) = 2 e^{-t} - e^{-2t}; check f(0)=1=lim⁡s→∞sF(s)f(0) = 1 = \lim_{s \to \infty} s F(s). Non-example: F(s)=s/(s+1)F(s) = s/(s + 1) has deg⁡P=deg⁡Q\deg P = \deg Q, so the method does not apply as stated. Indeed F(s)→1F(s) \to 1 as s→∞s \to \infty, while the Laplace transform of a function tends to 00 at infinity; here F=1−1/(s+1)F = 1 - 1/(s+1) is the transform of the distribution δ−e−t\delta - e^{-t}. For real PP and QQ, the complex roots come in conjugate pairs, and the two terms of a simple pair combine into eαt(Acos⁡βt+Bsin⁡βt)e^{\alpha t}(A \cos \beta t + B \sin \beta t). The coefficients of simple roots are quickly found with the Heaviside cover-up method.
