Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set, and let T>0T > 0. Let u ⁣:Ω×(0,T)→ℝu \colon \Omega \times (0, T) \to \R have one continuous partial derivative in tt and two continuous partial derivatives in xx. The heat equation on Ω×(0,T)\Omega \times (0, T) is the parabolic equation ∂u∂t(x,t)=Δu(x,t),x∈Ω, 0<t<T.\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}(x, t) = \Delta u(x, t), \qquad x \in \Omega, \ 0 < t < T. Here Δ=∂x12+⋯+∂xn2\Delta = \partial_{x_1}^2 + \cdots + \partial_{x_n}^2 is the Laplacian in xx.

Remarks

Many authors write ∂tu=αΔu\partial_t u = \alpha \Delta u with a constant α>0\alpha > 0, the diffusivity; the change of variable t↦αtt \mapsto \alpha t reduces it to α=1\alpha = 1. Example: for k>0k > 0, u(x,t)=e−k2tsin⁡(kx)u(x, t) = e^{-k^2 t} \sin(k x) solves the heat equation on ℝ×(0,∞)\R \times (0, \infty), since ∂tu=−k2u\partial_t u = -k^2 u and ∂x2u=−k2u\partial_x^2 u = -k^2 u. Non-example: u(x,t)=ek2tsin⁡(kx)u(x, t) = e^{k^2 t} \sin(k x) is not a solution, since ∂tu=k2u\partial_t u = k^2 u while ∂x2u=−k2u\partial_x^2 u = -k^2 u; it solves the backward heat equation ∂tu=−Δu\partial_t u = -\Delta u. The equation is usually completed by an initial condition u(x,0)=g(x)u(x, 0) = g(x) and, when Ω≠ℝn\Omega \ne \R^n, by boundary conditions on ∂Ω\partial \Omega.
