Holomorphic function of several variables
Builds on Several complex variablesFréchet derivativeLinear mapOpen set
Definition
Let be an open set in and let . The function is complex differentiable at if there is a -linear map such that The function is holomorphic on if it is complex differentiable at every point of .
Remarks
The map is the Fréchet derivative of at , and it has the form . Example: is holomorphic on , since and . Non-example: is real differentiable with derivative , but this map is not -linear, since it sends to . Equivalent forms: is holomorphic on if and only if is continuous and holomorphic in each variable separately. It is also equivalent that is, near each point , the sum of a convergent power series in several variables centred at . By Hartogs's theorem on separate holomorphicity, the continuity condition in the first equivalent form may even be dropped. The set of holomorphic functions on is written .
