Partial differential equations Definition
Helmholtz equation
Builds on Partial differential equationLaplacian
Definition
Let , let be an open set, and let be a real constant. Let be twice differentiable. The Helmholtz equation on with wave number is the partial differential equation where is the Laplacian. The inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation is for a given function on .
Remarks
Example: in , for a unit vector , the plane wave is a solution, since . Non-example: is not a solution, since ; it solves instead , the modified Helmholtz equation. If solves the wave equation , then solves the Helmholtz equation with . On a bounded domain with zero boundary values, the equation has a nonzero solution exactly when is an eigenvalue of with that boundary condition. Some authors allow complex .
