Definition

Let d≥1d \ge 1 and m≥1m \ge 1 be integers with 2m>d2m > d. Define φ ⁣:[0,∞)→ℝ\varphi \colon [0, \infty) \to \R by φ(r)={r2m−dlog⁡rif d is even,r2m−dif d is odd,\varphi(r) = \begin{cases} r^{2m-d} \log r & \text{if } d \text{ is even}, \\ r^{2m-d} & \text{if } d \text{ is odd}, \end{cases} with φ(0)=0\varphi(0) = 0. Let Πm−1\Pi_{m-1} be the space of polynomials on ℝd\R^d of total degree at most m−1m - 1. A polyharmonic spline of order mm with distinct centres x1,…,xN∈ℝdx_1, \dots, x_N \in \R^d is a function s(x)=∑i=1Nwi φ(∥x−xi∥)+p(x),s(x) = \sum_{i=1}^{N} w_i\, \varphi(\norm{x - x_i}) + p(x), where p∈Πm−1p \in \Pi_{m-1} and the real weights satisfy ∑i=1Nwi q(xi)=0\sum_{i=1}^{N} w_i\, q(x_i) = 0 for every q∈Πm−1q \in \Pi_{m-1}.

Remarks

Suppose the centres are unisolvent for Πm−1\Pi_{m-1}, that is, the only q∈Πm−1q \in \Pi_{m-1} vanishing at all xix_i is 00. Then for any data y1,…,yNy_1, \dots, y_N there is exactly one polyharmonic spline with s(xi)=yis(x_i) = y_i. This is radial basis function interpolation with the radial basis function φ\varphi. Up to a constant factor, φ(∥x∥)\varphi(\norm{x}) is a fundamental solution of Δm\Delta^m, where Δ\Delta is the Laplacian, so ss satisfies Δms=0\Delta^m s = 0 away from the centres. The interpolant minimizes the seminorm ∑∣α∣=mm!α!∫ℝd(∂αf)2\sum_{\abs{\alpha} = m} \frac{m!}{\alpha!} \int_{\R^d} (\partial^\alpha f)^2 among suitable functions with f(xi)=yif(x_i) = y_i. Example: d=1d = 1, m=2m = 2 gives φ(r)=r3\varphi(r) = r^3 and s(x)=∑wi∣x−xi∣3+a+bxs(x) = \sum w_i \abs{x - x_i}^3 + a + bx with ∑wi=∑wixi=0\sum w_i = \sum w_i x_i = 0; this is a natural cubic spline. Non-example: in the same setting, s(x)=∣x∣3s(x) = \abs{x}^3 (one centre 00, w1=1w_1 = 1) violates the side condition ∑wi=0\sum w_i = 0, and indeed it is not linear outside the centres. For d=2d = 2, m=2m = 2 one gets φ(r)=r2log⁡r\varphi(r) = r^2 \log r, the thin plate spline.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
