Potential theory Harmonic functions Example
Harmonic function on a ball
Builds on Poisson kernelLaplacianOpen ball
Example
Let , let be the unit open ball, and fix a point with . Consider the function which is the Poisson kernel of the ball with pole , up to a constant factor. It is positive on , because and . To check that it is harmonic, write , and . Then , , and , where is the Laplacian. The product rule gives Since , the bracket equals , so .
Remarks
As tends to a boundary point , the numerator tends to and the denominator stays away from , so . As along the radius, tends to . So is a positive harmonic function on the ball that vanishes on the whole boundary sphere except at one point.
