Definition

Let š’Ÿ\mathcal{D} be a convex set of probability distributions on ā„\R that contains every point mass Ī“x\delta_x, and let T ⁣:š’Ÿā†’ā„T \colon \mathcal{D} \to \R be a functional. Let Fāˆˆš’ŸF \in \mathcal{D} and xāˆˆā„x \in \R. The influence function of TT at FF is IF(x;T,F)=lim⁔ε↓0T((1āˆ’Īµ)F+εΓx)āˆ’T(F)ε,\mathrm{IF}(x; T, F) = \lim_{\varepsilon \downarrow 0} \frac{T\big((1 - \varepsilon) F + \varepsilon \delta_x\big) - T(F)}{\varepsilon}, defined at those xx where the limit exists.

Remarks

It is the one-sided Gateaux derivative of TT at FF in the direction Ī“xāˆ’F\delta_x - F. The gross-error sensitivity is Ī³āˆ—(T,F)=sup⁔x∣IF(x;T,F)∣\gamma^*(T, F) = \sup_x \abs{\mathrm{IF}(x; T, F)}, and TT is called B-robust at FF when Ī³āˆ—\gamma^* is finite. Under regularity conditions, n(T(Fn)āˆ’T(F))\sqrt{n}\big(T(F_n) - T(F)\big) is asymptotically normal with mean 00 and variance EF[IF(X;T,F)2]E_F\big[\mathrm{IF}(X; T, F)^2\big], where FnF_n is the empirical distribution.

Example: the mean T(F)=∫t dF(t)T(F) = \int t \, dF(t), on distributions with finite mean. Then T((1āˆ’Īµ)F+εΓx)=(1āˆ’Īµ)μ+εxT((1-\varepsilon)F + \varepsilon\delta_x) = (1-\varepsilon)\mu + \varepsilon x with μ=T(F)\mu = T(F), so IF(x;T,F)=xāˆ’Ī¼\mathrm{IF}(x; T, F) = x - \mu, which is unbounded. For the median at a distribution FF with median mm and a density ff that is continuous and positive at mm, IF(x;T,F)=sgn⁔(xāˆ’m)/(2f(m))\mathrm{IF}(x; T, F) = \sgn(x - m) / (2 f(m)) for x≠mx \ne m, which is bounded.

Non-example: the mean is not defined at a distribution FF without a finite expectation, such as the Cauchy distribution. Then FF lies outside š’Ÿ\mathcal{D}, and the mean has no influence function at FF.
