Definition
Let be a given function, the collision kernel, where is the unit sphere in . For and put For a function the collision operator is The Boltzmann equation is the partial differential equation for an unknown function , . The operator acts on the variable , and is the gradient in .
Remarks
The pair runs over the velocities after an elastic collision of two particles with velocities and : one has and .
Example: for and , the Maxwellian , constant in and , is a solution. The left side vanishes, and by the two conservation laws above, so .
Non-example: is not a solution, because while and .
For hard spheres the kernel is for a constant .
