Definition
Let and be smooth manifolds, and give the set of smooth maps the Whitney topology. Two smooth maps are equivalent if there are diffeomorphisms and with . A smooth map is stable if there is a neighbourhood of in such that every is equivalent to .
Remarks
Example: the height function , , on the unit circle is stable. Its critical points are nondegenerate with distinct values . Any close enough to in the sense also has exactly two nondegenerate critical points, a maximum and a minimum. Their values are distinct, and such a is equivalent to . Non-example: a constant map is not stable. The maps come arbitrarily close to and have nonzero differential at some points, while every map equivalent to is constant. For a compact manifold , a function is stable if and only if all its critical points are nondegenerate and its critical values are pairwise distinct. The equivalence used here is often called -equivalence, or left-right equivalence.
