Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a domain that has a Green's function G ⁣:Ω×Ω→(0,+∞]G \colon \Omega \times \Omega \to (0, +\infty]. This holds for every domain when n≥3n \ge 3, and for a plane domain whose complement is not a polar set. Fix a reference point x0∈Ωx_0 \in \Omega. The Martin kernel of Ω\Omega with reference point x0x_0 is the function M(x,y)=G(x,y)G(x0,y)for x∈Ω, y∈Ω∖{x0}.M(x, y) = \frac{G(x, y)}{G(x_0, y)} \qquad \text{for } x \in \Omega,\ y \in \Omega \setminus \set{x_0}.

Remarks

For fixed yy, the function M(⋅,y)M(\cdot, y) is positive and harmonic on Ω∖{y}\Omega \setminus \set{y}, and M(x0,y)=1M(x_0, y) = 1. By Harnack's inequality, when yy stays away from a compact set K∋x0K \ni x_0, the functions M(⋅,y)M(\cdot, y) are uniformly bounded on KK. Let (yk)(y_k) be a sequence that leaves each compact subset of Ω\Omega. Then a subsequence of M(⋅,yk)M(\cdot, y_k) converges locally uniformly to a positive harmonic function hh with h(x0)=1h(x_0) = 1. Example: let Ω\Omega be the unit ball of ℝn\R^n and x0=0x_0 = 0. If yk→ζy_k \to \zeta with ∣ζ∣=1\abs{\zeta} = 1, then M(x,yk)→(1−∣x∣2)/∣x−ζ∣nM(x, y_k) \to (1 - \abs{x}^2) / \abs{x - \zeta}^n, the Poisson kernel for the normalised surface measure. A change of reference point x0x_0 multiplies M(⋅,y)M(\cdot, y) by the factor G(x0,y)/G(x0′,y)G(x_0, y) / G(x_0', y).
