Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2, let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a bounded open set with boundary ∂Ω\partial\Omega, and let f ⁣:∂Ω→ℝf \colon \partial\Omega \to \R be a bounded function. The Perron family of ff is the set 𝒮f\mathcal{S}_f of all subharmonic functions vv on Ω\Omega such that lim sup⁡x→ξ, x∈Ωv(x)≤f(ξ)for every ξ∈∂Ω.\limsup_{x \to \xi, \, x \in \Omega} v(x) \le f(\xi) \quad \text{for every } \xi \in \partial\Omega. The Perron solution of ff is the function Hf ⁣:Ω→ℝH_f \colon \Omega \to \R given by the supremum Hf(x)=sup⁡v∈𝒮fv(x).H_f(x) = \sup_{v \in \mathcal{S}_f} v(x). The Perron method is the construction of HfH_f as a candidate solution of the Dirichlet problem with boundary data ff.

Remarks

The family 𝒮f\mathcal{S}_f is not empty, since it contains the constant inf⁡f\inf f, and each v∈𝒮fv \in \mathcal{S}_f is at most sup⁡f\sup f by the maximum principle; so HfH_f is finite. Perron's theorem says that HfH_f is harmonic on Ω\Omega. Its proof replaces a function of the family by its Poisson integral on a small ball, which keeps it in the family and makes it larger. Example: on the unit disc with f(ξ)=ξ1f(\xi) = \xi_1, the function v(x)=x1v(x) = x_1 belongs to 𝒮f\mathcal{S}_f, and the maximum principle gives v≤x1v \le x_1 for every v∈𝒮fv \in \mathcal{S}_f, so Hf(x)=x1H_f(x) = x_1. Non-example: v(x)=x1+12v(x) = x_1 + \frac12 is subharmonic but not in 𝒮f\mathcal{S}_f, since its boundary values exceed ff by 12\frac12. A boundary point ξ\xi at which Hf(x)→f(ξ)H_f(x) \to f(\xi) for every continuous ff is called a regular boundary point.
