Definition

Let U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \R^n be an open set and let f ⁣:U→ℝf \colon U \to \R be a given function. Poisson's equation on UU with right-hand side ff is the equation Δu=f\Delta u = f for an unknown function u ⁣:U→ℝu \colon U \to \R, where Δ\Delta is the Laplacian. A classical solution is a twice continuously differentiable function uu on UU with Δu(x)=f(x)\Delta u(x) = f(x) for every x∈Ux \in U.

Remarks

Example: on U=ℝnU = \R^n with f=1f = 1, the function u(x)=∣x∣2/(2n)u(x) = \abs{x}^2 / (2n) is a classical solution, since each term ∂i2(xi2/(2n))\partial_i^2 (x_i^2 / (2n)) equals 1/n1/n. Non-example: u(x)=∣x∣2/2u(x) = \abs{x}^2 / 2 on ℝ2\R^2 is not a solution for f=1f = 1, since Δu=2\Delta u = 2. With f=0f = 0 the equation is Laplace's equation. If u1u_1 and u2u_2 solve the same Poisson equation, then u1−u2u_1 - u_2 is harmonic. Many texts write the equation as −Δu=f-\Delta u = f, the sign that makes the operator positive. If ff is twice continuously differentiable with compact support in ℝn\R^n, n≥2n \ge 2, then u=Φ∗fu = \Phi * f solves −Δu=f-\Delta u = f on ℝn\R^n, where Φ\Phi is the fundamental solution of the Laplacian. Weak and distributional solutions are defined for less regular ff.
