Definition

Let Ω⊂ℝn\Omega \subset \R^n, n≥2n \ge 2, be a bounded connected open set with smooth boundary ∂Ω\partial\Omega and outward unit normal ν\nu. Let H1/2(∂Ω)H^{1/2}(\partial\Omega) and H−1/2(∂Ω)H^{-1/2}(\partial\Omega) be the boundary Sobolev spaces of order 12\tfrac12 and −12-\tfrac12. For f∈H1/2(∂Ω)f \in H^{1/2}(\partial\Omega), let uf∈H1(Ω)u_f \in H^1(\Omega) be the weak solution of the Dirichlet problem Δu=0 in Ω,u=f on ∂Ω.\Delta u = 0 \text{ in } \Omega, \qquad u = f \text{ on } \partial\Omega. The boundary condition is taken in the sense of the trace operator. The Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator is the map Λ ⁣:H1/2(∂Ω)→H−1/2(∂Ω),Λf=∂νuf∣∂Ω.\Lambda \colon H^{1/2}(\partial\Omega) \to H^{-1/2}(\partial\Omega), \qquad \Lambda f = \partial_\nu u_f|_{\partial\Omega}. More generally, let γ\gamma be measurable on Ω\Omega with c≤γ≤c−1c \le \gamma \le c^{-1} for some c>0c > 0. The operator Λγ\Lambda_\gamma uses the equation ∇⋅(γ∇u)=0\nabla \cdot (\gamma \nabla u) = 0 and the weakly defined Neumann data γ ∂νu∣∂Ω\gamma \, \partial_\nu u|_{\partial\Omega}.

Remarks

Example: let Ω\Omega be the unit disk and f(θ)=eikθf(\theta) = e^{ik\theta} with k∈ℤk \in \Z. Then uf=r∣k∣eikθu_f = r^{\abs{k}} e^{ik\theta} is harmonic, and ∂ruf=∣k∣\partial_r u_f = \abs{k} at r=1r = 1, so Λf=∣k∣f\Lambda f = \abs{k} f. Thus on the circle Λ=(−∂θ2)1/2\Lambda = (-\partial_\theta^2)^{1/2}. Non-example: replacing Δu=0\Delta u = 0 by Δu+λu=0\Delta u + \lambda u = 0, where λ\lambda is a Dirichlet eigenvalue of −Δ-\Delta on Ω\Omega, does not define a map, because the boundary value problem has no unique solution. In general Λ\Lambda is self-adjoint and nonnegative on L2(∂Ω)L^2(\partial\Omega), with kernel the constants, and it is a first-order elliptic pseudo-differential operator with principal symbol ∣ξ∣\abs{\xi}. It is also called the Poincaré–Steklov operator, and the weak form is ∫∂Ω(Λf) g=∫Ω∇uf⋅∇ug\int_{\partial\Omega} (\Lambda f) \, g = \int_\Omega \nabla u_f \cdot \nabla u_g.
