Del operator

Builds on GradientDivergenceCurlLaplacian

Summary

The del operator ∇=(∂∂x1,…,∂∂xn)\nabla = \left( \frac{\partial}{\partial x_1}, \dots, \frac{\partial}{\partial x_n} \right) is a vector of partial derivative operators on ℝn\mathbb{R}^n. It gives a short notation for the gradient ∇f\nabla f, the divergence ∇⋅F\nabla \cdot F, the curl ∇×F\nabla \times F in ℝ3\mathbb{R}^3, and the Laplacian ∇2f=∇⋅∇f\nabla^2 f = \nabla \cdot \nabla f.

Remarks

The notation treats ∇\nabla like a vector, but it is an operator. For example, ∇⋅F\nabla \cdot F and F⋅∇F \cdot \nabla are different: the first is a function, and the second is the operator ∑iFi ∂/∂xi\sum_i F_i \, \partial / \partial x_i. The directional derivative of ff along vv is (v⋅∇)f=v⋅∇f(v \cdot \nabla) f = v \cdot \nabla f. The symbol ∇\nabla is called nabla.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
