Porous medium equation
Builds on Parabolic partial differential equationLaplacianHeat equation
Definition
Let be open and let be a real number. The porous medium equation is the parabolic equation for a function : where is the Laplacian in .
Remarks
Example: the Barenblatt solution with a constant and , solves the equation on in the weak sense. For each its support is the ball , so it spreads at finite speed. Non-example: for the equation is the heat equation, which is excluded; its solutions with nonnegative nonzero data are positive everywhere for . Writing shows that the equation is degenerate parabolic where . The case is called the fast diffusion equation.
