Fractional Laplacian
Builds on LaplacianSchwartz spaceFourier transform
Definition
Let and . Let be the Schwartz space, and let be the Fourier transform of . The fractional Laplacian of is the function defined by
Remarks
Equivalently, for and , The integral formula also makes sense for bounded functions. Example: for with , the integral formula gives , in agreement with the multiplier . Non-example: the exponent is excluded, since the constant tends to as and the singular integral diverges; the multiplier gives the ordinary operator instead. The function is smooth but in general not in , since is not smooth at ; it decays like .
