Definition

Let n≥0n \ge 0 be a real number, called the polytropic index. The Lane–Emden equation of index nn is the ordinary differential equation 1ξ2ddξ(ξ2dθdξ)+θn=0\frac{1}{\xi^2} \frac{d}{d\xi} \left( \xi^2 \frac{d\theta}{d\xi} \right) + \theta^n = 0 for a function θ\theta of ξ>0\xi > 0, with the initial conditions θ(0)=1\theta(0) = 1 and θ′(0)=0\theta'(0) = 0. When nn is not an integer, the equation is considered on the interval where θ≥0\theta \ge 0.

Remarks

For a radial function u(x)=θ(∣x∣)u(x) = \theta(\abs{x}) on ℝ3\R^3, the first term is the Laplacian Δu\Delta u, so the equation is Δu+un=0\Delta u + u^n = 0. Example: for n=0n = 0, θ(ξ)=1−ξ2/6\theta(\xi) = 1 - \xi^2/6 is the solution. Indeed, ξ2θ′=−ξ3/3\xi^2 \theta' = -\xi^3/3, whose derivative divided by ξ2\xi^2 is −1-1, and θ0=1\theta^0 = 1. Non-example: for n=1n = 1, the constant θ=1\theta = 1 is not a solution, since the left side equals 11. Closed-form solutions are known for n=0n = 0, n=1n = 1, where θ=sin⁡ξ/ξ\theta = \sin \xi / \xi, and n=5n = 5, where θ=(1+ξ2/3)−1/2\theta = (1 + \xi^2/3)^{-1/2}. In PDE the name Lane–Emden equation, or Lane–Emden–Fowler equation, is also used for −Δu=∣u∣p−1u-\Delta u = \abs{u}^{p-1} u on a domain of ℝN\R^N with p>1p > 1.
