Definition
Let , let be an open set, and let be subharmonic on and not identically on any connected component of . Then is locally integrable on . Moreover, there is a unique positive Radon measure on such that where is Lebesgue measure and is the Laplacian. The measure is the Riesz measure of . In other words, in the sense of distributions.
Remarks
Some authors normalise differently, for example by in the plane, so that has Riesz measure . If is of class , then . The function is harmonic on an open subset of if and only if .
Example: let on . Integration by parts gives , so . Example: for on , Green's formula gives .
Non-example: for , the distribution is a negative measure. This matches the fact that is not subharmonic, so the hypothesis of the definition fails and has no Riesz measure.
