Definition
Let and let be a positive Borel measure on with finite total mass and compact support. The Newtonian potential of is the function , It is the potential of with respect to the Newtonian kernel.
Remarks
Example: for and a point mass, . Non-example: in the function is not the Newtonian potential of any such , since a Newtonian potential tends to at infinity. The function is lower semicontinuous, harmonic on , and as . If with twice continuously differentiable with compact support, then is twice continuously differentiable and , where is the area of the unit sphere. Equivalently, , where is the fundamental solution of the Laplacian. Some texts call itself the Newtonian potential of , and use the same name in the plane with the logarithmic kernel.
