Newtonian potential

Summary

The Newtonian potential of a mass distribution μ\mu in ℝn\R^n, n≥3n \ge 3, is the function Uμ(x)=∫∣x−y∣2−n dμ(y)U^\mu(x) = \int \abs{x - y}^{2-n} \, d\mu(y). It is the potential of the measure μ\mu with respect to the Newtonian kernel. In ℝ3\R^3 it is the gravitational potential of Newton's theory, up to the gravitational constant and a sign. It is harmonic off the support of μ\mu. In the sense of distributions it solves Poisson's equation ΔUμ=−(n−2)σnμ\Delta U^\mu = -(n-2)\sigma_n \mu, where σn\sigma_n is the area of the unit sphere.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
