Definition
Let and let be a bounded domain whose boundary points are all regular. For , let be the harmonic measure of at , a Borel probability measure on . Let be a finite positive Borel measure with compact support in . The balayage of onto is the Borel measure on given by
Remarks
Write for the Newtonian potential. Then and on . Indeed, for the function is harmonic on and continuous on , so it is the integral of its boundary values against . Inside one has . Example: let be the ball of radius about and . Then is the normalised surface measure on the sphere, so is that measure. Its potential is , which equals for . Non-example: itself is not a balayage of onto , since it is not carried by . More generally, for any set the balayage is the measure whose potential is the regularised reduced function .
