Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a bounded open set whose boundary ∂Ω\partial\Omega is a C1C^1 hypersurface, with surface measure σ\sigma. Let Φ\Phi be the fundamental solution of the Laplacian, Φ(x)=−12πlog⁡∣x∣ (n=2),Φ(x)=1(n−2) ωn ∣x∣2−n (n≥3),\Phi(x) = -\frac{1}{2\pi} \log\abs{x} \ (n = 2), \qquad \Phi(x) = \frac{1}{(n-2)\,\omega_n}\, \abs{x}^{2-n} \ (n \ge 3), where ωn\omega_n is the area of the unit sphere in ℝn\R^n, so that −ΔΦ=δ0-\Delta \Phi = \delta_0. Let φ ⁣:∂Ω→ℝ\varphi \colon \partial\Omega \to \R be continuous. The single layer potential with density φ\varphi is the function Sφ(x)=∫∂ΩΦ(x−y) φ(y) dσ(y),x∈ℝn.S\varphi(x) = \int_{\partial\Omega} \Phi(x - y)\, \varphi(y)\, d\sigma(y), \qquad x \in \R^n.

Remarks

The integral is a surface integral. For x∉∂Ωx \notin \partial\Omega the integrand is smooth in xx, and SφS\varphi is harmonic on ℝn∖∂Ω\R^n \setminus \partial\Omega. For x∈∂Ωx \in \partial\Omega the singularity of Φ(x−y)\Phi(x - y) is integrable on the (n−1)(n-1)-dimensional surface, so Sφ(x)S\varphi(x) is still defined. It is the potential of the measure φ σ\varphi\,\sigma carried by ∂Ω\partial\Omega.

Example: let Ω\Omega be the unit ball in ℝ3\R^3 and φ≡1\varphi \equiv 1. Then Φ(x)=1/(4π∣x∣)\Phi(x) = 1/(4\pi\abs{x}) and the mean of 1/∣x−y∣1/\abs{x - y} over the unit sphere in yy is 1/max⁡(∣x∣,1)1/\max(\abs{x}, 1). Since the sphere has area 4π4\pi, Sφ(x)=1S\varphi(x) = 1 for ∣x∣≤1\abs{x} \le 1 and Sφ(x)=1/∣x∣S\varphi(x) = 1/\abs{x} for ∣x∣≥1\abs{x} \ge 1. It is continuous across the sphere, while its radial derivative jumps from 00 to −1-1.

Non-example: the integral ∫ΩΦ(x−y)f(y) dy\int_\Omega \Phi(x - y) f(y)\, dy over the open set itself is a volume potential, the Newtonian potential of ff, and not a single layer potential. It is a potential of a charge spread through a solid, not over a surface.
