Maximum principle for potentials

Builds on Radon measureNewtonian potentialSupport of a measureContinuity principle

Statement

Let n≥3n \ge 3 and let μ\mu be a positive Radon measure on ℝn\R^n with compact support SS. Let Uμ(x)=∫ℝn∣x−y∣2−n dμ(y)U^\mu(x) = \int_{\R^n} \abs{x - y}^{2-n} \, d\mu(y) be its Newtonian potential, with values in [0,∞][0, \infty]. Let MM be a real number with Uμ(x)≤MU^\mu(x) \le M for every x∈Sx \in S. Then Uμ(x)≤MU^\mu(x) \le M for every x∈ℝnx \in \R^n.

Remarks

Proof idea: first assume that UμU^\mu restricted to SS is continuous. The continuity principle then makes UμU^\mu continuous on ℝn\R^n. On the open set ℝn∖S\R^n \setminus S the potential is harmonic, it is at most MM on the boundary, which lies in SS, and it tends to 00 at infinity. The maximum principle for harmonic functions gives Uμ≤MU^\mu \le M there. The general case follows by restricting μ\mu to compact subsets of SS on which UμU^\mu is continuous, which exist by Lusin's theorem, and letting these subsets increase.

Example: let μ\mu be the uniform measure of total mass mm on the unit sphere in ℝ3\R^3. By the shell theorem, Uμ(x)=mU^\mu(x) = m for ∣x∣≤1\abs{x} \le 1 and Uμ(x)=m/∣x∣U^\mu(x) = m / \abs{x} for ∣x∣≥1\abs{x} \ge 1. So Uμ≤mU^\mu \le m on the support, and indeed Uμ≤mU^\mu \le m everywhere.

The positivity of μ\mu is needed. Let σ\sigma be the uniform probability measure on the unit sphere of ℝ3\R^3 and let μ=−σ\mu = -\sigma. Then Uμ=−1U^\mu = -1 on the support, but Uμ(x)=−1/∣x∣>−1U^\mu(x) = -1/\abs{x} > -1 for ∣x∣>1\abs{x} > 1. For logarithmic potentials in the plane the same statement holds: if ∫log⁡(1/∣z−w∣) dμ(w)≤M\int \log(1/\abs{z - w}) \, d\mu(w) \le M on the support of μ\mu, then it is at most MM on all of ℂ\C.

For a student

The principle is due to Maria and to Frostman. It is the key step that turns an inequality on the support of a measure into an inequality everywhere. It is used in the proof of Frostman's theorem to show that the equilibrium potential never exceeds its value on the conductor. For Riesz kernels ∣x−y∣α−n\abs{x - y}^{\alpha - n} with 0<α<n0 < \alpha < n and α>2\alpha > 2, only a weaker version holds, with MM replaced by a constant multiple of MM.
