Definition
Let and let be the volume of the unit ball of . The fundamental solution of the Laplacian on is the function given by
Remarks
The function is locally integrable on , and in the sense of distributions it satisfies , where is the Laplacian and is the Dirac delta at . So is a fundamental solution of in the general sense; many texts use this sign convention so that near the origin. Example: for , and . For a radial function with one has , and gives , so is harmonic on . Non-example: on is not a multiple of , and it is not harmonic there, since . The constant is chosen so that the flux of out of every sphere about equals ; here is the area of the unit sphere. Other normalisations, such as or without constants, are common in potential theory.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
