Polyharmonic function

Builds on LaplacianOpen set

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let m≥1m \ge 1 be an integer, and let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set. Let Δ\Delta be the Laplacian, and let Δm\Delta^m be Δ\Delta applied mm times. A function u ⁣:Ω→ℝu \colon \Omega \to \R is polyharmonic of order mm if it is of class C2mC^{2m} and Δmu=0on Ω.\Delta^m u = 0 \quad \text{on } \Omega.

Remarks

For m=1m = 1 this is the definition of a harmonic function, and for m=2m = 2 that of a solution of the biharmonic equation. A function that is polyharmonic of order mm is polyharmonic of every order m′≥mm' \ge m. Example: u(x)=∣x∣4u(x) = \abs{x}^4 on ℝn\R^n is polyharmonic of order 33: Δ∣x∣4=4(n+2)∣x∣2\Delta \abs{x}^4 = 4(n+2)\abs{x}^2, Δ2∣x∣4=8n(n+2)\Delta^2 \abs{x}^4 = 8n(n+2) and Δ3∣x∣4=0\Delta^3 \abs{x}^4 = 0. Non-example: the same uu is not polyharmonic of order 22, since Δ2u=8n(n+2)≠0\Delta^2 u = 8n(n+2) \ne 0. Non-example: u(x)=ex1u(x) = e^{x_1} is polyharmonic of no order, since Δmu=ex1≠0\Delta^m u = e^{x_1} \ne 0 for all mm.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
