Biharmonic equation
Builds on Partial differential equationLaplacianHarmonic function
Definition
Let and let be an open set. Let be four times continuously differentiable. The biharmonic equation on is the partial differential equation where is the Laplacian and . A solution is called a biharmonic function.
Remarks
In coordinates, ; in the plane, . Example: on , is biharmonic, since is constant and so . Non-example: is not biharmonic, since and then . Every harmonic function is biharmonic. The inhomogeneous equation is the plate equation; boundary conditions usually prescribe two quantities, such as and its normal derivative.
