Spherical harmonics
Definition
Let and be integers, and let be the unit sphere. A spherical harmonic of degree is a function such that for some polynomial on that is:
- a homogeneous polynomial of degree , and
- harmonic, that is, .
The spherical harmonics of degree form a complex vector space .
Remarks
Example: on , is a spherical harmonic of degree , since . Non-example: is homogeneous of degree but . On it equals , a sum of harmonics of degrees and , so it is not a spherical harmonic of degree . For , the dimension of is , which is for ; for it is when . Each satisfies for the Laplace–Beltrami operator of the sphere. The spaces are pairwise orthogonal in , and their sum is dense. For , in spherical coordinates, a standard orthonormal basis is for , where are the associated Legendre polynomials.
